Cannabis Retailers to Find Out if They Can Open Stores in Calgary Today

Calgary cannabis store applications

Monday's are usually hard to face, but this one might not be so bad, at least in Calgary. In the Canadian city, cannabis retailers are waking up both excited and nervous. Why? Well, because today is the day Calgary cannabis store applications will be reviewed, and if all goes well, passed.

Calgary Cannabis Store Applications: Accepted or Rejected?

On July 30th, cannabis retailers will receive word of whether they'll be eligible to open for business in October, the month Prime Minister Justin Trudeau chose for recreational cannabis legalization.

The cannabis companies that applied, many of which are based in Calgary, have been waiting to hear if they can operate stores in the city for a while. Calgary started accepting cannabis applications back in April. In total, 260 cannabis retailers applied.

The Competition Continues

The application process itself was quite competitive.

All 260 cannabis retailers had to get a business license, a police-check, and development and building permits. Companies were then required to apply to the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission.

But rivalries will continue even after officials weed out the winners and losers. By law, cannabis retailers are required to be 300 meters from each other.

Calgary Cannabis Store Applications: Details

Brand MacInnis, who is Calgary's Senior Project Lead, is said to be answering questions this morning at City Hall.

Questions will center around how decisions for the Calgary cannabis store applications were made, as well as about the appeal process.

Who Applied?

For starters, Spiritleaf is just one of the few Calgary-based cannabis companies that applied.

Ahead of the news, Darren Bondar, CEO of Spiritleaf, said that his team is hopeful "about the prospect of having certainty as to where we can open our stores."

The Takeaway

Things could easily change so I would keep an eye out today to see if the city does end up announcing which Calgary cannabis store applications passed the review.

Do you have any expectations as to who will pass and who won't?
