How CBD is Used for Pain Management

What is CBD Oil?

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is one of more than 120 chemical compounds or cannabinoids that are present in the Cannabis Sativa plant. CBD oil is derived from one specific type of cannabinoid.

Although cannabis has had a long history of medicinal usage all across the globe, it wasn't until recently that it became a part of mainstream medicine. It has had a controversial history. Most of the controversy around CBD has been due to its close association with marijuana, even though cannabidiol carries no psychoactive properties whatsoever due to the absence of THC content.

The FDA has laid out strict guidelines on what type of plants to use for the CBD extraction process and for making CBD-derived products. As per the guidelines, only hemp crops can be used for this purpose, which has gone through rigorous testing and carries no more than 0.3% THC content. This is to avoid any mind-altering effects of the product.

Speaking of hemp, Industrial Hemp Farms happens to be the leading name that grows and sells hemp and hemp-derived products on a large scale.

CBD History

National Geographic ran a story back in 2015 on Siberian burial mounds dating back to 3,000 BC that contained charred traces of cannabis seeds.

Cannabis is also a prominent part of Chinese medicine that has been functional for thousands of years. The article further explained how our founding fathers also used cannabis. George Washington, in particular, grew it on his plantation estate in Mount Vernon.

However, due to its close association with its psychoactive sibling THC, cannabis has had a tumultuous past. That is why the positive and medicinal aspects of cannabis and CBD have been overshadowed by marijuana's mind-altering properties.

However, it is slowly becoming a part of mainstream medicine and gaining more and more acceptance. That’s apparent from the fact that not so long ago, the FDA approved the first-ever CBD-based medicine designed to treat epilepsy, called Epidiolex.

Can You Use CBD for Pain Management?

In one word, the answer is—absolutely. In fact, pain management continues to remain the leading reason behind CBD’s growing popularity. Many suffering from chronic pains and aches resort to CBD as a natural and holistic way of easing the discomfort without relying on harmful pills and drugs.

CBD oil helps manage pain by interacting with the cannabinoid receptors that are present throughout the body but also in the brain. It interacts with the Endocannabinoid System of the body to render those effects.

Many studies highlight the link between cannabis usage and relief from the side-effects of chemotherapy treatments as well.

Another study that was sponsored by National Institutes Health looked into the role of cannabis in relieving the symptoms of below-mentioned conditions:

  • Chronic pain
  • Arthritis Pain
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Muscle pain
  • Menstrual Cramps
  • Backaches
  • Most localized pains

There’s a drug called Sativex, which is sold both in Canada and the UK. It’s made by combining CBD and THC. However, most experts feel it’s the presence of CBD that renders the anti-inflammatory properties to fight against the pain.

What Studies Have to Say About CBD’s Pain Management Properties

There’s a study by the European Journal of Pain that observed rats with arthritis and how they responded to CBD. The research observed the rats for four consecutive days during which CBD was applied topically. They observed a significant drop in signs of pain and inflammation in rats.

Here’s another promising clinical mention that talks about CBD’s effects on adults with Multiple Sclerosis. It mentions that short-term usage of CBD could reduce MS-related spasticity.

How to Use CBD?

You can get CBD into your system in a variety of ways. The first one is:

Oral Ingestion

You can grab CBD capsules. Since they come pre-measured and pre-dosed, they are much more convenient to consume. You can start with a small dose and slowly increase it until you find something that works the best for you.

You can also get CBD in the form of tincture. It’s basically CBD in liquid form that comes with a dropper. Use the dropper to place a few drops underneath your tongue and let it sit for about a minute. The tincture helps you accurately measure your dose and find out which one works the best for you.

CBD is also available in the form of edible gummies. You can think of these as regular gummy bears, only they are laced with CBD. Not only are they a delicious way of getting CBD in your system, but they also come in a range of interesting flavors.

Sidenote: This method of CBD consumption is ideal if you’re aiming for systemic anti-inflammatory effects, meaning you need to experience the effects on your entire body.

Topical Application

This method is the best if you need pain relief from localized pains such as backache or sore knees. As the name suggests, it involves the direct application of CBD creams and oils on the affected area.

Since this method bypasses the digestive tract, it’s much easier to be absorbed by the body. It enters the bloodstream rapidly through the skin and shows quick effects.

In Conclusion

With the introduction of Epidiolex, CBD’S popularity has soared, and it’s gaining more acceptance. More people are aware of its therapeutic side. The number of people who used to look down on CBD is reducing significantly by the day, which is good news.

But we need more solid research to back CBD’s health claims for a more mainstream and accepted usage on a wider scale. There’s also a strong need for awareness about cannabidiol’s holistic aspects.

OTC Risk Warnings

Because many securities traded Over-The-Counter (OTC) are relatively illiquid, or “thinly traded,” which tends to increase volatility in market prices, an investment in an OTC security involves a high degree of risk. These speculative and illiquid securities are often difficult for investors to buy or sell without significantly affecting the quoted price. It should be noted that the liquidation of a position in an OTC security may not even be possible within a reasonable period of time.
Dependable information regarding issuers of OTC securities, their prospects, or the risks associated with the business of any particular issuer or an investment in the issuer’s securities may not be available. For this reason, it may be difficult to properly value an investment in an OTC security or accurately determine the risks involved with investing in such a security. For more information about investing in microcap securities, please read the content on the SEC’s website, including the SEC’s investor publication titled “Microcap Stock: A Guide for Investors” available at https://www.sec.gov/investor/pubs/microcapstock.htm.
Issuers of OTC securities quoted on the OTC Link system are not required to provide any kind of information to investors. While many issuers register OTC securities with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and regularly provide reports to investors in connection with such registration, they are not required to continue such registration or regularly provide such reports because their securities are quoted on OTC Link. Securities may continue to be quoted on the OTC Link system if issuers are delinquent in their reporting obligation to the SEC or other federal or state regulatory agencies. Quotation of a security on the OTC Link system does not in itself create any ongoing filing or reporting obligations with the SEC for any issuer. In fact, issuers may not even be aware that their securities are quoted on the OTC Link system.
