Underage Canadian Marijuana Shoppers Hired for Sting Operation

Marijuana sting operations

Marijuana sting operations: Recreational cannabis will be legal across all Canadian provinces starting on October 17th.

Anyone in Canada under the age of 18 will not be allowed to purchase the cannabis products at local dispensaries. There are several weed-related offenses, but the ones most authorities are concerned about are underage minors being able to purchase weed.

Marijuana Sting Operations

According to CBC, officials in the province of Saskatchewan are planning on keeping a close eye on dispensaries once it becomes nationally legal. Sting operations will be set up where an underage, undercover buyer will go into a shop and try to obtain cannabis products.

The current legislation within the province has carved out space for authorities to hire minors. This tactic is used to make sure that shops are following age restrictions and abiding by the law.

The province already runs similar tests with liquor stores to make sure minors aren't being served alcohol. Most businesses moving into the legal cannabis sector are aware of the possibility of sting operations.

CEO of Prarie Cannabis, Jim Southam, told CBC:

"They have to have checks in place so they can monitor businesses to make sure they're doing what's required of them. It's just to be expected that they're going to be checking up on all aspects of cannabis retailers to make sure we're doing everything we're supposed to be doing."

Saskatchewan Cannabis Laws

At the national level, major lawmakers are finalizing details for the full registration, but the provinces have the ability to set up their own rules. Earlier this year, Saskatchewan announced its provincial laws for cannabis and most of them align with the national laws announced.

However, there are some that are unique to the province. Saskatchewan's legal age will be 19 - whereas the national law is 18. The same age goes for weed bought online, if the resident lives in the province they must be 19.
