Broward County Schools Now Allow Medical Marijuana Use on School Grounds

Medical Marijuana Policy

In Florida, the Broward County School Board has voted to allow a new medical marijuana policy to come into effect across its schools.

The new policy will allow students to receive medical marijuana treatment on school grounds under certain controlled conditions.

The vote was passed unanimously by all members of the board and brings to mind Illinois, where, a little over a week ago, a new state law was passed meaning parents could safely administer medical marijuana to their children, also on school grounds.

A New Medical Marijuana Policy

The new medical marijuana policy allows for oils, tinctures, and edibles, but not smokeable cannabis products. Further, the medicine must be administered by a parent or guardian and does not permit school teachers, nurses, or staff to store or administer the drug.

Seth Hyman, father to a daughter suffering from epilepsy, spoke on the decision:

"I was involved with the creation of the policies, and I think Broward County Schools took the very unique bold step."

On the effect of medical marijuana on his daughter's illness, Hyman stated that it doesn't cure it "100 percent, but it does help control some of her epilepsy."

Obstacles

As with any decision that pushes boundaries, the road isn't always made clear. Medical marijuana is legal in the state of Florida but it is not legal under federal law. If the state runs into any issues with the new policy, then the district could run the risk of losing federal funding.

If this is the case and issues arise, the policy will be suspended.

"I believe our attorneys aired on the side of caution and tried to follow all of the rules," said Robin Bartleman, Broward County School Board member. She continued: "We're not the ones administering it, and so I trust our attorney handled it appropriately. I know students have medical challenges, and we want every child to get the best, so this gives them that opportunity."

What do you think about the new policy? Would you want the option for your school-going child?
