Saskatchewan Sets its Rules for Recreational Marijuana Use

Saskatchewan recreational cannabis use

Saskatchewan Recreational Cannabis Use: With the law on recreational cannabis passed in Canada, rules surrounding the allowable use of the drug are emerging.

Bill C-45 was passed in mid-June by a 52-29 vote. It will come into effect on October 17th of this year.

Saskatchewan has released its rules on who, where and when recreational cannabis can be used. The first thing to note is that there will be fines implemented. These range from $200 to $2,250.

The province said in a statement that the rules surrounding cannabis use will be similar to those regarding alcohol.

The fines include:

  • Smoking in public places or campgrounds where there is a cannabis prohibition (Safe to assume that that represents most public parks, city streets, car parks, and pavements) will incur a $200 ticket fine. This also applies to the possession or the sharing of more than 30 grams of dried pot in a public place.
  • A $300 fine comes with a slap on the wrist if you're a minor caught buying, using or sharing marijuana. This includes use in a vehicle.
  • A $750 fine is given for anyone caught selling or giving cannabis to a minor.
  • The biggest fine comes in at $2,250 and is for licensed outlets who sell to a minor or do not demand proof of age.

The government says the fines will not be implemented until the provincial act comes into effect this October and until then recreational use is still illegal.
