Cannabis Legal in Canada But Won’t Be in 2019 if the Conservative Party Wins

Canadian cannabis legalization

And there it is. The Canadian cannabis legalization has happened, and things seem to be running smoothly. Or maybe not. Nova Scotia has run out of cannabis already, and now we have Conservative leader Andrew Scheer hinting at plans to delegalize cannabis if his party wins in 2019.

Canadian Cannabis Legalization: How Long Will It Last?

Cannabis legalization in Canada has sparked a number of debates. Some say the country wasn't ready, that the government rushed the decision, while others are thrilled, calling it a long-awaited move in the North American country. Andrew Scheer does not have the mentality of the latter group; in fact, he has the opposite.

Yesterday, Scheer, leader of the Conservative party, said that if his party wins in the 2019 election, there are no promises that cannabis will stay legal. He said that they will look at the "consequences of this decision," and then proceed to "examine the reality on the ground." In simpler terms, the Conservative party plans on criticizing the legalization and then will go from there.

Conservative Party Cannabis Thoughts

According to Scheer, and this is justifiable, Canada needs to be "realistic about what a change like this means for society." He also said on Thursday that the Canadian government "rushed" cannabis legalization so that they could meet an "artificial political deadline." Of course, this is not the first time someone has suggested this.

The Takeaway

If the Conservative party were to win next year, would you want them to delegalize cannabis? For me, while I am not personally affected by the Canadian cannabis legalization, I do agree with Scheer that the government may have rushed this decision.
