At this point, it's difficult to argue that cannabis isn't a proper form of medication. What has been difficult, however, is lessening the restrictions around medical cannabis. But in Illinois, a change is in the works. What sort of change? Well, it boils down to the new Illinois medical cannabis bill.
New Illinois Medical Cannabis Bill: What We Know
Yesterday, Republican governor Bruce Rauner signed a new law that requires public schools in the state of Illinois to allow parents of students to administer medical cannabis on the school's grounds. That is if the children are eligible to receive medical cannabis.
Now, this law doesn't apply to everyone, as noted above. Parents and children have to be cleared by the state's medical cannabis law if they want to administer the drug on school property.
Are there Any Restrictions?
Even though there is evidence of medical cannabis improving lives, not everyone is on board. Some still consider it to be dangerous, and to be just a drug, nothing more.
Governor Rauner understands this, which is why the bill has some rules. For starters, if a school starts to suspect that dispensing the drug is creating a "disruption to the school's educational environment" that school has the right to prohibit it.
Moreover, schools are also allowed to prohibit dispensing medical cannabis if they fear other students are being exposed to the 'drug' in a detrimental way.
In the Long Run
Again, some may not like the idea of children being administered medical cannabis. But the fact of the matter is that there are hundreds of children in the US alone that need medical cannabis for everyday life. If they have debilitating conditions, they may need medical cannabis to attend school.
