UK to Reschedule Medical Cannabis

UK medical cannabis is beginning to improve. The drug will be available with prescription next month. But why are we are seeing a change of heart from stubborn Britain? What's going on?

At present, cannabis oil that includes THC—the psychoactive component of marijuana—is only available for prescription in 'exceptional circumstances.' Other treatments must be trialed first and then the decision must be approved by a medical panel. This makes proceedings timely and costly. Cannabis oil as a solution, is in effect, a 'last resort.'

Change of Heart

However, yesterday, the Home Office decided to change the rules; Home Secretary Sajid Javid gave the go-ahead for 'rescheduling' the drug, and once this happens, medical cannabis will be available on prescription immediately.

Patients suffering from epilepsy, MS, nausea, and chronic pain from chemotherapy will have the option of cannabis-derived medicines. They will no longer need to try other treatments before specialist doctors can prescribe the drugs.

"This is very encouraging progress for thousands of people with MS who have been forced to choose between living with relentless pain and muscle spasm or breaking the law," said Genevieve Edwards of MS Society.

Cannabis oils that do not contain THC are completely legal and readily sold on the high street. However, these are far less potent and do not show the same positive results for treating ailments.

A government spokesperson said:

"We completely sympathize with the families who have been facing desperate situations as they try to find treatment [...] we have announced that cannabis-based products for medicinal use will be available for specialist doctors to prescribe legally from the Autumn."

The Home Office began to reassess its stance on medical marijuana when it granted an emergency license to Charlotte Caldwell back in July. Charlotte's son, 12-year-old Billy, had his cannabis oil seized at Heathrow Airport and controversy ensued.

The oil is the only successful treatment of Billy's intractable epilepsy, which can lead him to suffer up to 100 seizures a day.

So, medical cannabis in the UK? Yes, please.
