Vermont Legalizes Recreational Cannabis

Vermont legalizes recreational cannabis

Vermont legalizes recreational cannabis: On July 1st, recreation cannabis became legal in the state of Vermont. Vermont is now the ninth state to legalize recreational cannabis for adult use within the United States. It is also the first state to do so within legislature, rather than by vote.

Under Act 26, adults 21 and older may have up to an ounce of cannabis on them at a time, or five grams of hash. Recreational cannabis users are also able to grow up to four immature and two mature cannabis plants. Sales of recreational cannabis are not permitted under the new law.

Vermont Legalizes Recreational Cannabis: Details Unclear

The freshly passed law of recreational cannabis still has some aspects of it that remain unclear. The new law has yet to specify the weight limits allowed on possession of marijuana edibles. Where you can smoke or consume the products also remains unknown at this time.

More than likely, it will be similar to the laws put in place in the other states with recreational cannabis, but Vermont has yet to formally announce anything. Jim Whitcomb, captain of the Vermont State Police, said that the law will continue to develop over the next coming months.

Whitcomb told High Times:

"It's something that's going to come back to us, case law is going to be developed, troopers are going to have to adapt as they always do in our enforcement role. It is certainly something we're going to be revisiting on a regular basis."

The legalization of recreational cannabis has already led changes in the law enforcement's policy. Drug-dogs are no longer being trained to sniff for cannabis, and the smell of marijuana is no longer a probable cause for a vehicle search.

Driving under the influence of marijuana and even being high as a passenger is still against the law.
