Aphria Moves its Q4 Report Date to August 1 but Why?

Aphria and Molson

Aphria and Molson: Aphria Inc. (TSE:APH) has announced that it will delay its 2018 Q4 earnings report until August 1.

Usually, the company discloses its report on July 11. So what's the big deal with the company holding off for a few weeks? Nothing.

Except, a few eyebrows are being raised at the new release date of choice, as it happens to coincide with Molson Coors Brewing Co. (NYSE:TAP) Q2 earnings results.

Aphria and Molson: Coincidence?

Again, this would just be a happy coincidence if the two companies hadn't been inextricably linked in recent weeks.

The brewing company has been open about its desire to enter the cannabis market and to create new drinks using the plant. It is known that Aphria has been one of four cannabis producers Molson has had talks with.

Is this a release date high-five between Aphria and Molson? Are they giving us a hint that Aphria will be the supplier of choice for a new Molson line of cannabis-infused beverages?

As it stands, this still remains to be conjecture. But interestingly, it's showing that there is excitement out there for this potential partnership and it would no doubt cause a stock rise for both parties should it turn true. Molson's worldwide sales have been dropping and a cannabis-infused drink will give its stock the boost it needs.

Aphria has also been under-performing comparatively to its counterparts such as Canopy Growth Corp (OTC:CGC) and Aurora (OTCQX:ACBFF). And while we aren't expecting the earnings ramp up from legalization to take effect just yet, the company has lost 37% in 2018 already.

Recently Canopy Growth and Constellation Brands (NYSE:STZ) (the makers of Corona beer) became bedfellows. So it seems the next big thing for cannabis, is to team up with a global brewer. It's a partnership that goes together like cheese and a fine wine after all.

Of course, it could be that Aphria wants to schedule its earnings reports to fall on the first day of every month moving forward. That's also a very plausible reason for the date change. We will know come August 1.
