The First Cannabis Beer Has Been Brewed in Canada

No, it is not just a regular barley-brewed beer infused with cannabis oil. Oh no. There is a whole new meaning to the term 'cannabis beer' soon to arrive on the market.

A Canadian company has brewed the first beer which is made from "the stalks, stem, and roots of the cannabis plant.”

Province Brands Create Cannabis Beer

Province brands is the Toronto-based team behind the concoction which one can only imagine will be a major hit when it hits the bars. The beer should be ready for cannabis legalization when it takes effect October 17.

Canada is the second country in the world (after Uruguay) to completely legalize recreational cannabis and entrepreneurs across the country are seeking to take a piece of what is already shaping up to be a multi-billion dollar industry.

Using All of the Cannabis Plant

One major brilliance behind the cannabis beer is that it makes use of what is otherwise considered waste within the marijuana industry; the beer is the right combination of hops, water, yeast and the stocks, stem, and roots of the cannabis plant.

Alcohol is entirely removed from the beverage during processing and so the result is an alcohol-free, gluten-free beer that still gives you a high. But not-too-much of a high; the aim is to create a beer with enough THC (the psychoactive compound within cannabis) to roughly mimic a single dose of alcohol. So far this is averaging at 6.5mg THC a beer.

But surely it can't taste all too good? Well, this remains to be seen and judged but according to the company's creator Dooma Wendschuh: “The flavor is dry, savory, less sweet than a typical beer flavor...the beer hits you very quickly, which is not common for a marijuana edible.”

Sounds good to me!

The Future of Beer Beverages?

It seems Wendschuh and his team are onto a good thing; Marijuana giants are also chasing the "cannabis as alcohol" market. One example being Canopy Growth (TSE:WEED), which is developing a line of cannabis-infused cocktails. And recently, Beer giant Molson Coors has expressed its interest in teaming up with a cannabis company to create its own line of cannabis-infused beverages.

But again, these ideas follow the more traditional infusion of marijuana oil with a standard brewed beer. Province Brands is taking that to the next level with its inclusion of the entire plant.

Who's up for a pint come October 17?
