Cannabis Update Maryland House Work Group Meeting, California County Penalties For Illegal Weed Farms, Green Dragon Workers

The cannabis world was busy this week with a lot of different news to be aware of. Here are some highlights that might catch your attention.

Maryland House Work Group On Cannabis Legalization Schedules First Meeting

On Friday, Judiciary Chairman Luke Clippinger announced at the Maryland State Bar Association’s Legal Summit that the first meeting of the Maryland House work group for the legislative session would be held on June 14. The news shocked Maryland’s most prominent marijuana advocate, Sen. Brian Feldman, who was expecting more collaboration between the two chambers before the meeting.

It should also be noted that in April, Maryland’s House of Delegates passed two bills that would allow states to decide in November whether or not to legalize possession and use of marijuana for adults over 21.

California County Supports Bill To Punish Illegal Cannabis Farms for Water Theft And Pollution

California Globe reported that San Bernardino, one of the counties in California most affected by illegal marijuana growth, is sponsoring a bill to better regulate the illegal digging of wells without legal permission, which is frequently done by illegal cannabis farms. This bill also addresses the havoc done by fertilizers and pest control chemicals which have adverse effects on both humans and the environment.

This bill is sponsored by State Senator Anna Caballero. In a recent statement, Caballero said, “Illegal cannabis farming is killing wildlife and wreaking environmental damage across the state. This bill will help stop pollution of our groundwater supply and the theft of water, which are all the more important during an ongoing multi-year drought.”

Green Dragon Cannabis Workers Unionize Due To Low Pay and Safety Issues

According to Denverite (a Denver-based news publication), Green Dragon cannabis workers unionized on Thursday. The decision to unionize was made through voting with 14 yeses to 11 no votes. Employers stated the reason for the unionizing was that the workers were asking for better treatment from the company. According to the workers, Green Dragons has already illegally fired four workers for organizing union-related meetings. The members of the union have now made plans to set up a committee that will push for better conditions, higher pay, workplace respect, and improved safety measures.
